The type of extraction you need depends on the position of the tooth, how much healthy tooth structure remains and the condition of the surrounding bone and gum tissue.
Dr. Geoff Engelhardt provides routine extractions and has additional experience with more complex and surgical extractions, including selected wisdom tooth cases. Dr. Raechel Nelson primarily provides routine tooth extractions.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed. However, extraction may be considered when a wisdom tooth causes repeated pain, swelling, infection, damage to a nearby tooth or other oral health concerns.
Dr. Geoff Engelhardt has completed approximately 50 wisdom tooth extractions over the course of his career and may treat selected cases depending on their complexity. More involved wisdom tooth cases may be referred to an oral surgery specialist.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction
Our team understands that having a tooth removed can feel stressful. We will take time to answer your questions, review your health history and help you understand the procedure before treatment begins.
During your visit, the area around the tooth will be thoroughly numbed. Your dentist will then carefully loosen and remove the tooth using the technique appropriate for that particular case.
If you feel nervous about dental treatment, let us know. Engelhardt & Nelson Family Dentistry provides care in a quiet, low-pressure environment, and sedation may also be available for appropriate cases with a nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist.
After the extraction, we will provide clear post-operative instructions so you know how to care for the area at home. These instructions may include how to manage soreness, reduce swelling, protect the blood clot and keep the area clean as it heals.

He has completed approximately 200 hours of continuing education related to oral surgery and extractions, in addition to about 1,500 total hours of continuing education.
Dr. Raechel Nelson has practiced dentistry since 2009 and has completed more than 500 tooth extractions, primarily routine cases. She has completed approximately 50 hours of continuing education related to oral surgery and extractions, along with approximately 1,000 total hours of continuing education.
Both doctors completed hospital-based general practice residency training. Dr. Geoff Engelhardt completed his residency through Northwestern University and Lakeside VA Hospital, where his training included surgery, anesthesia and care for medically complex patients. Dr. Raechel Nelson completed her residency at the University of Utah Hospital.
